    Kudos to Disqus for Wordpress

I installed the new Disqus Wordpress plugin this week.  I had held off before because it didn’t support trackbacks but the new features made it seem worth a try.  I was really impressed because it did NOT go smoothly.

The process is: 1) Install and activatate the plugin. 2) Tell Discus to import your existing comments from the Wordpress database.  I can tell you from experience that #2  doesn’t scale well.  Database import/expoorts, no matter how simple, basically need to be overseen by a human because some percentage of the time the import/export is going to be misaligned.  Whomever the product people are at Discus had 2 options - they could make ME the lowly blogger manage and debug the process or they could have someone there do it.  Making me do it scales better (in theory they need fewer employees per new user).  It also guarantees that some of their customers are going to have bad user experiences.

Per my post on the new brand math, it’s crucial in the Internet age that you manage every single customer interaction.  Asking users to debug database import/exports would be a big mistake.

So there WAS a problem with my import/export.  I found out because AndrewB at Disqus sent me an email.  I emailed him back telling him I was pulling the plugin down, and to let me know when I should try it again.  He emailed me back this morning and told me “We fixed the glitch”.  I turned Discus back on, and found all my comments imported successfully.

If Disqus had relied on me to debug the import/export, I likely would have pulled the product down and grumbled a little.  Instead, they managed the interaction and got a customer and a glowing blog post.  That is how you scale a business.

    • I am sorry but I completely disagree with you on the 'kudos' part. As far as I am concerned they upgraded without any warning, they released a plugin without and warning. The plugin didn't even get highlighted in wordpress because they don't use WP.org's/plugins which excacerbated the situation in my opinion.

This was a terrible roll-out of a new product that was very embarrassing for me and it took a user so motivated to comment reaching out to me via my contact form to tell me Roger not sure when you get up but you may want to look into your commenting problem.. HUH?

I just woke up and apparently my comments had been down for a couple hours.

No I won't be forgiving them for this for a very very long time and am actually reviewing my options.

That being said they were reasonably responsive even though finding the appropriate outlet etc was also problematic.

Glad your experience was better than mine but honestly Steve what do you know you just started using them!
    • Thanks for the comment. I wasn't so much endorsing Disqus (since I am new to the platform) as I was complimenting their proactive customer service and customer friendly install process. Guess they still have some work to do.

I work in the community tools space (Flux actually offers a comments widget as well) and I can tell you that the problem you had is not altogether uncommon due to the complexity of the overall system. What Disqus and anyone else who wants to stick around in this space needs to figure out is a way to instrument their live widgets to at least "phone home" when they inevitably go down or break on your mission critical pages.
    • Hi Steve

Yeah phoning home would be a great idea and hopefully high on their list but
also realising Bloggers are not consumers we are like businesses with
reputations and an audience and as such we deserve a heads up.

Early last week I sent a stifly worded email to the team about informing
Bloggers and they said they would include me in their beta testing later
that week. Then yesterday I wake up over a week later and poof my site is
      pooched.

As you can imagine I was livid and totally unimpressed with their attitude.
Again I am glad your CS experience has been good just remember my tail and
keep that in mind when your comments suddenly disappear and there is no
announcement on their website etc. ;)
    • Hi Roger, what happened to your site? The new plugin is completely opt-in and should have no bearing on an existing installation.

If so, I apologize and would appreciate the details.
    • Daniel,

Don't know what happened and the details are sketchy since I went directly
from waiting for my morning coffee to panic attack.

I went to my Admin panel and of course as I allude above it didn't say
'upgrade plugin' so I thought okay Disqus must be down.. Damn. I went to the
blog to find out what was up and found out there was an upgrade. This was my
first and strong hint something was up.

So I tried to remember even where to find the plugin as it wasn't even
linked to on the blog post. Finally found it and noticed there was a new
      one and downloaded it.

Activated it and it worked except that now I couldn't see anything in my
dashboard and couldn't even disable the plugin. I had a choice I could be
happy that my blog wasn't broken and just wait until my issue with my admin
panel missing which was mentioned already in the forum got resolved or I
could delete the plugin manually and go back without knowing what else could
      go wrong.

I elected forward was the only way as then at least I would be part of the
majority and receive the more attention regarding my problem as you need to
      prioritise.

All in all it was an upsetting experience and I won't put myself through
that again so I am very happy you sync
our comments and there are local versions now so when Disqus does something
silly like this again I am expecting nothing to affect my blog. Am I right
      or wrong in this expectation?

As an aside Daniel thank you for taking the time and your apology but you
know what this time sorry doesn't cut it. I told you and your team many
times Bloggers are not users we are businesses.
    • Our latest blog post details the issue you were having. The latest
package does address the issue with the missing admin panel.

You are correct about future expectations. After a successful sync,
comments will be locally stored as well so issues with Disqus should
not affect your comments. I understand that an apology won't settle
everything, but I am truly sorry (to the people who had issues) for
allowing this to happen. We do extensively test but there are some
problems that didn't arise until the sample size was as large as we
      just had it.

      Daniel
    • Yup Disqus is the best Commenting system EVER!
    • Disqus is really great, nice system
    • Been using disqus for some weeks now, and even with their bugs, I love it. I goes along very well with any blog.
    • While Disqus does have it's quirks, I think it's the best commenting platform currently available. I tried Intense Debate as well, but prefer Disqus. Not that I'm knocking Intense Debate, I just prefer the Disqus features and support. I had some issues getting ID to install and set-up correctly and their support was slow (over a week) to respond.
    • Busby SEO Test!!!
disqus is great, but beware with the spams :D
    • Disqus is really great, nice system
    • the best commenting tool i have ever come across or used!
    • I'm quite new to Disqus. but what you write in this post is really good and very informative. I think it will help me in the future. Thanks for the great work.
    • Nice review. I will try it out.
    • DISQUS allows the blogger to have greater control with comments. It's one of hte useful tools that any blogger can have.
